Vietnam Tour Package vs Self-Planned Trip: Which Is Better for Your Budget?
Planning a trip to Vietnam from India but confused about whether to book a Vietnam tour package or plan everything yourself?
You are not alone.
Many travellers see Vietnam tour packages starting at around ₹70,000 and wonder whether it is better to book a package or plan a Vietnam trip independently.
We recently travelled to Vietnam as a family of 8 for 7 Nights and 8 Days.
Our overall spending was approximately ₹70,000–₹80,000 per person, including our travel expenses, accommodation, food, sightseeing/tickets and shopping.
So, based on our real experience, I wanted to make a practical comparison between a ₹70,000 package example and our self-planned Vietnam trip.
Important: Package prices and inclusions vary from company to company. The ₹70,000 package mentioned here is only an example for comparison. Always check exactly what is included before booking.
Vietnam Tour Package vs Self-Planned Trip
| Feature | Around ₹70,000 Tour Package | Our Self-Planned Trip |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Example: 4 Nights / 5 Days | 7 Nights / 8 Days |
| Flights | According to package | Arranged by us |
| Hotel | Selected according to package | We selected according to our needs |
| Food | Depends on package inclusions | We chose where and when to eat |
| Sightseeing | Fixed itinerary | We decided ourselves |
| Transportation | Scheduled/arranged | We used transport according to our plans |
| Shopping | Usually separate | Included in our overall spending |
| Flexibility | Limited | Much higher |
| Planning | Less work | More research required |
| Guide | Depends on package | No fixed guide |
| Control | Package itinerary | We controlled our own plans |
1. Duration: 4 Nights / 5 Days vs 7 Nights / 8 Days
For this comparison, let's take an example of a ₹70,000 Vietnam tour package for 4 Nights / 5 Days.
A short package can be suitable for people who want a quick and organised holiday.
Our Vietnam trip was much longer.
We travelled for 7 Nights / 8 Days.
Because we planned the trip ourselves, we could decide how many days we wanted to stay and which places we wanted to visit.
During our Vietnam trip, we visited places such as:
- Nguyen Hue Walking Street
- An Dong Market
- Tan Binh Market
- Vung Tau
- Cu Chi Tunnels
- Saigon Zoo
- Saigon Square
- AEON Mall
- Local markets

2. Package Price Does Not Always Mean Total Trip Cost
This is one of the most important things to understand before booking a tour.
If you see:
Vietnam Tour Package – ₹70,000
you should first check exactly what that ₹70,000 includes.
Depending on the package, it may include:
- Flight tickets
- Hotel
- Airport transfers
- Selected sightseeing
- Selected meals
- Transportation
- Guide services
But some expenses may be separate.
For example:
- Shopping
- Extra meals
- Drinks
- Personal transportation
- Optional activities
- Personal expenses
- Some entrance tickets
- Visa, depending on the package
So don't compare only the advertised package price.
Compare the complete cost.

3. Our Self-Planned Vietnam Trip Cost
Our family of 8 travelled to Vietnam for 7 Nights / 8 Days.
Our overall spending was approximately:
₹70,000–₹80,000 per person
This was our real trip experience and included the expenses we counted for:
- Travel
- Accommodation
- Food and water
- Sightseeing and tickets
- Shopping
- Other trip expenses
This is our personal experience, not a fixed budget for every traveller.
Your Vietnam trip can cost more or less depending on your flights, hotel, travel dates, food choices, activities and shopping.
4. Food: Package Meals vs Your Own Choice
Food is another area where you should carefully check the package details.
For example, a ₹70,000 package may include breakfast and selected meals, but the exact inclusions depend on the package.
Before booking, ask:
Is breakfast included every day?
Is lunch included?
Is dinner included?
Are drinks included?
Are vegetarian meals available?
This is especially important for Indian vegetarian travellers.
When we travelled independently, we could decide where and when to eat.
We also tried Indian restaurants during our Vietnam trip.
For us, this flexibility was useful because we were travelling as a family.
5. Shopping: Don't Forget This Expense
Shopping is usually a separate personal expense when you book a tour package.
For example, if your package costs ₹70,000, you may still want to keep an additional budget for:
- Clothes
- Bags and purses
- Shoes
- Gifts
- Watches
- Souvenirs
- Other personal shopping
During our Vietnam trip, our overall spending of approximately ₹70,000–₹80,000 per person included shopping as part of our total expenses.
We visited places such as:
- An Dong Market
- Tan Binh Market
- Saigon Square
- AEON Mall
- Local markets

6. Freedom: Fixed Itinerary vs Your Own Plans
This was one of the biggest differences for us.
With a tour package, the itinerary is normally planned in advance.
You may have a fixed schedule such as:
Morning – Sightseeing
Afternoon – Another attraction
Evening – Shopping or hotel
You generally need to follow the group's schedule.
With a self-planned trip, we could decide ourselves.
If we wanted to visit a particular place, we could include it.
If we wanted to spend more time somewhere, we could.
If we wanted to return to the hotel, we could change our plan.
For a family trip, this flexibility can be very useful.
7. Transportation
With a package, transportation is generally arranged according to the tour itinerary.
This can be convenient because you don't have to arrange every journey yourself.
During our Vietnam trip, we used transportation according to our plans.
We used Grab, travelled by ferry to Vung Tau, and arranged transportation for different sightseeing trips according to our family's requirements.
Our Vung Tau experience was also part of our independent itinerary.
If you are planning your own trip, our [Vietnam Airport Guide for Indian Travellers] can also be useful.

8. Hotel Choice
With a tour package, the hotel is generally selected according to the package category.
You may have limited choices regarding the exact hotel.
With a self-planned trip, you can select your hotel according to:
- Location
- Price
- Reviews
- Family requirements
- Nearby restaurants
- Shopping areas
- Transportation
For our family, having control over the accommodation was useful.
9. Sightseeing: Fixed Itinerary vs Your Own Itinerary
A package tour normally has a predetermined sightseeing schedule.
This can be convenient because someone else has already planned the route.
But you may have limited time at each attraction.
With a self-planned trip, you decide which places you want to visit and how much time you want to spend there.
For example, we decided to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels and arranged the trip according to our own plans.

10. Planning Effort
This is where a tour package can be much easier.
With a package, the tour company takes care of many arrangements.
You don't have to spend as much time researching:
- Flights
- Hotels
- Transfers
- Sightseeing
- Daily itinerary
- Transportation
With a self-planned trip, you have to do this research yourself.
Before our Vietnam trip, we researched flights, hotels, visa requirements, transportation and sightseeing.
I also handled our Vietnam e-visa process myself.

a yourself, read:

11. Our Practical Cost Comparison
Example: Tour Package
Around ₹70,000
4 Nights / 5 Days
The package may include flights, hotel, selected meals, transportation and sightseeing, depending on the company.
But you should check whether shopping, extra meals, visa and personal expenses are separate.
Our Self-Planned Trip
Approximately ₹70,000–₹80,000 per person
7 Nights / 8 Days
Our overall spending included the expenses we counted for:
Travel + accommodation + food + sightseeing/tickets + shopping + other trip expenses.
This is why we feel that comparing only the advertised package price does not give the complete picture.
Package vs Self-Planned: Which One Costs Less?
This is the question most travellers want to know.
The honest answer is:
It depends.
A ₹70,000 package may look cheaper initially, but you need to check what is included and what you will have to pay separately.
A self-planned trip can also become expensive if you choose expensive flights, hotels, restaurants and activities.
However, self-planning gives you more control over those choices.
So instead of asking only:
“Which one is cheaper?”
ask:
“What is included in the package, and what will my actual total cost be?”
That is the more useful comparison.
Who Should Choose a Vietnam Tour Package?
A tour package may suit you if:
- You don't want to spend time planning.
- You prefer a fixed itinerary.
- You want organised transportation.
- You are travelling internationally for the first time.
- You prefer a guide or organised group.
- You are comfortable following a fixed schedule.
Who May Prefer a Self-Planned Vietnam Trip?
Self-planning may suit you if:
- You want more freedom.
- You want to choose your own hotel.
- You want to decide where to eat.
- You want to spend more time at selected places.
- You want flexibility with transportation.
- You want to decide your own shopping budget.
- You are comfortable researching before travelling.
What We Learned From Our Vietnam Trip
Our biggest learning was simple:
Don't compare only the package price.
Compare the complete trip.
Look at:
Duration
Flights
Hotel
Meals
Sightseeing
Transportation
Visa
Shopping
Personal expenses
and finally:
The actual total amount you will spend.
For our family of 8, we planned our own 7 Nights / 8 Days Vietnam trip and spent approximately ₹70,000–₹80,000 per person overall, including our counted travel expenses, accommodation, food, sightseeing/tickets and shopping.
The biggest advantage for us was the freedom to make our own decisions during the trip.
Final Thoughts: Vietnam Package or Self-Planned Trip?
If your priority is convenience and less planning, a tour package can be a practical option.
If your priority is freedom, flexibility and your own itinerary, a self-planned trip can give you more control.
There is no single option that is perfect for every traveller.
Before booking a Vietnam tour package, compare the complete inclusions and exclusions.
And before planning independently, calculate your expected total cost for flights, hotel, food, sightseeing, visa, transportation and shopping.
Our own experience was a 7 Nights / 8 Days self-planned Vietnam family trip costing approximately ₹70,000–₹80,000 per person overall, including the expenses we counted for travel, accommodation, food, sightseeing/tickets and shopping.
Your budget may be different, but doing this comparison can help you understand where your money is actually going.
